A 4-hour drive from Houston, TX to appreciate the Milky Way and dark skies. Not bad, not bad at all.
If you have never experienced looking up to see the Milky Way extending from North to South in all its splendor you don't know what you are missing.
There are inherent precautions that you need to take if you decide to hike at night to experience the starry sky. At first, a fear of the dark will invade you, but it will gradually be replaced by a feeling of Peace and wonder. You'll know that the sounds behind the bushes will probably be deer, not mountain lions, (well, at least not in the Eastern Hill Country for now), and that you will be safe. This is Creation in its primordial state.
