At its opening, the 150,000-square-foot SLC was “by far the most expensive capital project the university has even entertained,” said then Regents chair W. Fred Cameron. The project garnered wide support, with more than 2,100 individuals and organizations giving to help make the SLC a reality. It was named in honor of the family of Baylor graduate Drayton McLane, who helped spearhead the project.
I was a Baylor student at the time, watching in awe as what was then the largest building on campus was erected. My friends and I took full advantage of the new workout facilities, rock wall, basketball and racquetball courts, pool and health center, and today’s students probably can’t imagine campus without the SLC.
Thanks for looking.
